Her face was one of those with sharp edges and lines that held onto the lights and shadows in a very unfamiliar way. She looked worn and tired, but her smile was truer than ever as if she found some sort of new secret to life and the beautiful, tender happiness she so often reached for.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">In time, her right fingertips would go yellow from the hundreds of cigarettes she would put to her fine lips. But tonight was still one of her first, and she took slow, deliberate breaths through her teeth.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">She called herself a reasonable person, this was her favorite thing to say, and it caused her a fair amount of conflict. Still, she had a great way of settling herself even in the most exhausting of situations.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">We were both tired, and the summer had given us much to think about, but we enjoyed each other’s company beneath the tin roof. Soon the rain created an orchestra and she let out a sigh.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">“I wish it rained during the day. Rainy days are much easier spent than raining nights.”</p> <p class="MsoNormal">“I don’t know, I rather like it.”</p> <p class="MsoNormal">“Oh John,” she barely looked at me but her smile was pained and it hurt my heart. I didn’t want to hear what she said next.
